Jean the Genie was fed up with his head stuck in a book. He’d spent hours on his homework, but was still utterly stuck. Although he tried hard to concentrate, he still didn’t get past question number eight. He polished his lamp, but it was no good. It still didn’t glisten like a genie’s lamp should. No matter whatever the genie read, his books didn’t make sense and he soon got a sore head. Hoping that it might give him a better chance, Jean the Genie tried a belly dance. Still his sums didn’t add up … and he only knocked over the tea in his cup. Suddenly, “Abracadabra !”, the genie’s problems disappeared and all the answers to his questions miraculously appeared. Jean the Genie thought a lot, about how to improve his maths and become a swot. As he was doing his wash, he said a magic spell and suddenly cried “Oh ! Gosh !”. As he rinsed out his clothes, he sneezed on washing powder that tickled his nose. Whilst Jean Genie was wondering what on Earth to wear, he whispered, “Atishoo ! Shazam !”, and three socks flew into the air. He soon became so clever that, he could multiply everything, including the cat ! When Jean the Genie put a pair of jeans into soak, his jeans started dancing in a puff of smoke ! Magic jeans, with jumpin’ beans, with scientific theory in their genes. The pair of jeans was a genius - whenever Jean the Genie put them on, within seconds, his homework was soon all done !
When Jean the Genius wore her new pair of jeans, genius things started to work. But some letters disappeared in a puff of smoke - which 3 letters should they be ?

Write a mathematical equation to solve the following maths problems.
1. If Jean the Genie read 80% of his book, which had 380 pages, how many more pages did he have to read ?
2. If Jean the Genie spent 4 hours on his homework every day, how long is that every week ?
3. If Jean the Genie still didn’t get past question number eight out of 24 questions,
a) What fraction had he completed ?
b) What decimal did he still have to do ?
4. If Jean the Genie spent 12 hours polishing his genie lamp in 4 weeks. On average, how long is that per day ?
5. If Jean the Genie knocked over 1 : 4 mls of the tea in his cup, which contained 200 mls, how much tea was left ?
6. If Jean the Genie socks flew into the air at a speed of 7.5 m / minute, how long did it take the sock to fly 1 km ?
7. If Jean the Genie sneezed five times every minute. How many times is that in one hour ?
8. Jean the Genie majicked a puff of smoke, that measured 150 cm wide. The second puff of smoke was three times bigger.
a) How big was the second puff of smoke ?
b) How much bigger was it in actual size than the first puff of smoke ?
9. If there were 300 jumping beans in Jean the Genie’s jeans, divided between four pockets in a ratio of 1 : 2 : 4 : 5, how many were in each pocket ?
10. If Jean the Genie’s “Abracadabra” made everything five times bigger, draw a picture of his lamp, 5 cm wide and 7.5 cm high, then draw a second, after his magic started to work.

Answers :
1. 380 - (380 / 100 x 80 = 304) = 376
. 4 x 7 = 28 hours
3. a) 8 / 24 = 1 / 3 b) 0.66 r
4. (12 x 60) / (4 x 7) = 720 / 28 = 2
5.7 minutes 5. 150
6. 1000 / 7.5 = 133.3 r
7. 5 x 60 = 300
8. a) 450 cm wide b) 300 cm
9. One part = 300 / (1 + 2 + 4 + 5 = 12) = 25 therefore, 25 : 50 : 100 : 125
10. -
