The chubby grub on Jack’s beanstalk wasn”t always fat. He started life only the size of a flea on the cat. But, gradually, he started to munch, (He’d eaten half a carrot just before lunch). Then, bit by bit, the grub grew, before very long, he’d multiplied by two. The chubby grub grew quite tubby, it was the millions of calories that made him chubby. The chubby grub grew so wide, when he tried to climb through the letterbox, He could hardly fit inside. Very soon, he couldn’t fit his pants, he reached all the way from Liverpool to Northants. The giant grub, with his gigantic appetite, chomped one of Jack the Beanstalk’s branches in just one bite. When his hairy feet climbed over the leaves, the chubby grub flattened two trees. As the chubby grub crawled from down under, the squirrel in Jack’s beanstalk looked on in wonder. Every time it yawned, the chubby grub made the sound of thunder. Every time the chubby grub tumbled, lightening flashed and more thunder rumbled. When the chubby grub jumped up and down on the spot, Jack’s beanstalk shook rather a lot. But the chubby grub clung on tight, and munched all the slugs before he went to bed for the night. The spider in his sticky web, called to the chubby grub to watch his head. But the chubby grub didn’t care at all. He was too busy munching fleas before nightfall. The chubby grub loved Jack’s beanstalk’s beans, it gave him a healthy portion of vitamins, in his daily munch of greens.
Write a mathematical equation to show your working out to the following maths problems.
1. Jack’s beanstalk was 50 metres tall. If it took 5 minutes for the chubby grub to climb 50 cm, how long did it take him to clomb right the way to the top ? Give your answer in minutes and hours.
2. Jack’s beanstalk grew 30 apples. It took the chubby grub 8 minutes to eat one quarter of an apple, how long did it take to eat them all ? Give your answer in minutes and hours.
3. Jack’s beanstalk was one third bigger than the chubby grub. If the chubby grub was 45 m high, how big was the beanstalk ?
4. Jack’s beanstalk produced 50 beans on every branch. If there were 150 branches, how many beans were produced ?
5. Jack’s beanstalk had 1000 insects – butterflies, slugs, spiders and caterpillars in a ratio of 1 : 1 : 3 : 5. How many of each type of creepy crawlie were there ?
6. Jack’s beanstalk grew at a speed of 35 cm per day. How long did it take to become 500 metres high ? Give your answer in days and years.
7. The grub on Jack’s beanstalk grew one fifth of this speed. How long did it take the grub to become 2 metres long ?
8. The chubby grub ate 1.4 fleas every hour. How many fleas is that in one day ?
9. The chubby grub ate 500 beans. 20 % of them were runner beans – how many is that ?
10. The chubby grub then ate 0.2 more broad beans – how many is that ?

Answers : 1. 50 x 2 x 5 = 500 mins = 8.3 hours 2. 30 x 4 x 8 = 14,400 mins / 60 = 240 hours3. 45 + (45 / 3 = 15) = 60 m4. 150 x 50 = 7, 500 beans5. butterflies : slugs : spiders : caterpillars 100 : 100 : 300 : 5006. a) 500 x 100 / 35 = 1,428.574 days b) 3.91 years7. 35 / 5 = 7 cm per day therefore, 200 / 7 = 28.5 days
8. 1.4 x 24 = 33.6 fleas
9. 500 / 100 x 20 = 100 beans
10. 100 + (100 / 10 x 2 = 20) = 120
