Juicy Lucy, Where Did You Get That Hat ?

glasses2.jpg

Juicy Lucy looked about - she couldn’t decide which hat to wear to go out. She opened up her cupboard drawer - and came across a hat that was easy to adore ! It fit not really that well at all … but she didn’t care, because she had to get to Old Hall. When she was on the bus, Juicy Lucy looked ludicrous, but she thought her hat was lustrously luxurious ! Juicy Lucy loosened the ribbon on her hat. It was hot and sunny and it tickled her blonde, long plait. Luckily, Lucy had some luggage to spare - in it she found a hat to wear. The bus ride was bumpy - the potholes made Lucy jumpy. Juicy Lucy looked under the chair - there were lots of bags, but no hat anywhere. They’d been thrown away with tickets everywhere - but none of the things belonged to Lucy. A scarf, a coat and an umbrella, too, Lucy looked under them - there was no hat, old or new. Because the road wasn’t all that flat, Juicy Lucy lost her hat. She wondered if she’d ever get it back - she should have known better than to wear a hat so slack. It wasn’t on the luggage rack ! Under the escalator stair, by the engine or on the track. Nor in the lost and found - perhaps she’d left it on the undergorund ! Lucy Lou asked the bus conductor if he knew, “What colour is it ? ” (it was blue). “Oh ! dear, Lucy, Lou - now what on Earth shall we do ? !”. Juicy Lucy looked again - but she still couldn’t find her hat - “Oh ! What a pain !”. When the bus stopped, off Lucy hopped. Whilst the bus driver parked, Lucy quickly disembarked. Once Juicy Lucy had had a bite to eat, she headed off down the street - straight to a hat shop - she wanted to replace the hat that she’d dropped (remembering to pick one that didn’t quite so much flop like her lost hat she lost when the bus stopped). Juicy Lucy tried them on - there were all different kinds of caps. Bonnets and bowlers, woollen and even one with flaps. Lucy looked over her shoulder, she hoped she’d find a hat to fit, before she got much older and probably would sit on it ! As Juicy Lucy tried them on for size, one was so big, it covered her eyes. Juicy Lucy’s ears were cold - so she picked a hat that unfold. When Juicy Lucy looked in the mirror, the passers - by gazed - “However did Juicy Lucy find such a lovely hat ?”, they were truly amazed.

glasses2.jpg

That’s T - Hat !

glasses2.jpg 1. Juicy Lucy loosened the ribbon on her hat. If ribbon cost £1.25 per metre, how much did she pay for a ribbon that 75 cm long ? Round off your answer to the nearest whole number.

glasses2.jpg 2. Juicy Lucy’s bus bumped over one pothole every 3 metres. If the bus journey was 25 km long, how many potholes did she bump over ?

glasses2.jpg 3. Juicy Lucy found 15 hats in her luggage. She tried on one third. How many is that ?

glasses2.jpg 4. In the bus station, Juicy Lucy found 77 hats in the lost and found : bench : taxi rank in a ratio of 1 : 2 : 4. How many were in each place ?

glasses2.jpg 5. In the lost and found, Juicy Lucy found 6 umbrellas, 12 coats, 18 lost hats and 24 lost jumpers.

a) What fraction of the lost things were umbrellas ?

b) What decimal of the lost things were coats ?

c) What decimal of the lost things were lost hats ?

d) What percentage of the lost things were jumpers ?

glasses2.jpg 6. Juicy Lucy’s hat fell off every 5 minutes. How many times is that in 3 hours ?

glasses2.jpg 7. When the bus stopped, off Lucy hopped. There were 12 people in the queue at the bus - stop and Juicy Lucy was third. What fraction, decimal and percentage is that ?

glasses2.jpg 8. If Juicy Lucy paid £5.99 for a hat, how much change did she receive from £50.00 ?

glasses2.jpg 9. Juicy Lucy put on her hat because the temperature dropped by 15 degrees Celcius. If it was 24 degrees Celcius in January, what was when the weather got colder ?

glasses2.jpg 10. Juicy Lucy lost her hat once every 3 weeks - how often is that in one year ? Round off your answer to the nearest whole number.

The Mad Hatter Who Couldn’t Get His Hat To Fit

hat1.jpg

No wonder the mad hatter was mad, he couldn’t get his hat to fit … and it was the only hat he had ! He squeezed his locks underneath the brim, he even got a brand new trim, but his wig kept falling out from beneath the rim ! He tied it with a ribbon but still it was too big, perhaps the mad hatter should have bought a different kind of wig ! He got his haircut, so perhaps his hat could fit better, but in the rain, the mad hatter still got wetter and wetter ! The mad hatter was madder than ever, when it snowed, it wasn’t that clever. All he wanted was a hat that fit, or perhaps a head that was smaller a bit. He went to the shops, but it was no good, his hat still didn’t fit as it should. When the mad hatter put his hat on, it only slipped off and his hat was gone ! The mad hatter got quite irate - he jumped up and down and crashed into a gate !

Hats Off !

Name as many different types of hats that you can think of.

Jean The Genie and the Genius Pair of Jeans

genie21.jpgaladin.jpg

Jean the Genie was fed up with his head stuck in a book. He’d spent hours on his homework, but was still utterly stuck. Although he tried hard to concentrate, he still didn’t get past question number eight. He polished his lamp, but it was no good. It still didn’t glisten like a genie’s lamp should. No matter whatever the genie read, his books didn’t make sense and he soon got a sore head. Hoping that it might give him a better chance, Jean the Genie tried a belly dance. Still his sums didn’t add up … and he only knocked over the tea in his cup. Suddenly, “Abracadabra !”, the genie’s problems disappeared and all the answers to his questions miraculously appeared. Jean the Genie thought a lot, about how to improve his maths and become a swot. As he was doing his wash, he said a magic spell and suddenly cried “Oh ! Gosh !”. As he rinsed out his clothes, he sneezed on washing powder that tickled his nose. Whilst Jean Genie was wondering what on Earth to wear, he whispered, “Atishoo ! Shazam !”, and three socks flew into the air. He soon became so clever that, he could multiply everything, including the cat ! When Jean the Genie put a pair of jeans into soak, his jeans started dancing in a puff of smoke ! Magic jeans, with jumpin’ beans, with scientific theory in their genes. The pair of jeans was a genius - whenever Jean the Genie put them on, within seconds, his homework was soon all done !

Aunt Sally’s Hat Cupboard

hat1.jpg

Aunt Sally’s hat cupboard was full of interesting caps. In fact, her caps did amazing things. When she wore her Easter bonnet, the Sun came out and flowers started to grow. When she put on her woolly Winter hat, everything turned into snow. Aunt Sally liked her all her hats, but the one she tended to prefer, was the magical maths hat, made out of magical fur. You wouldn’t believe what she could do, when wearing her hats, things multiplied by two ! The cupboard door was soon so large, that Aunty Sally could use it as a barge and charge. Aunt Sally had lot of maths jobs around the house, so she put on her magical furry maths hat (although she looked like a mouse !). She wanted to measure the size of the hall … wearing her furry maths hat, it was easy to see, how furry maths magic makes things treble by three. Aunt Sally couldn’t decide, whether to add, subtract, multiply or divide. She put on her maths hat and easy as A B C, everything in the hat cupboard started to spin magically and mathematically. In the kitchen, Aunt Sally wanted to bake a cake, but she really had no idea how much sugar the recipe would take. But as soon as she put her hat on, the cake was quickly tastily done. Although, Aunt Sally’s furry maths hat just about covered her ears (she hadn’t done this much maths homework in years !).

hat1.jpg 1. If Aunt Sally’s hat had a diameter of 25 cm, work out the dimension of the radius and circumference of the hat, using the formula for working out the distance of a arc.

hat1.jpg 2. When Aunt Sally’s hat was rolled into three, it measured 7 cm wide. How wide is normally ?

hat1.jpg 3. Aunt Sally knit a hat. Three centimetres required one quarter of a ball of wool. If the hat was 21 cm wide, how much wool did she need ?

hat1.jpg 4. Aunt Sally dropped her hat in a well that measured 500 m deep. She noticed that steps lead down, but still it was only 20% towards the hat. How long did the rope need to be, therefore ?

hat1.jpg 5. As Aunt Sally put her hat on a hatstand, she knocked off 50% of the 12 hats. How many were left ?

hat1.jpg 6. Aunt Sally’s hat shrank in the wash ! It was 60 cm high but reduced in size by one fifth. How big did it then become ?

hat1.jpg 7. Aunt Sally was 175 cm tall, but wearing her hat, she increased by 10 cm - how high did she then become ?

hat1.jpg 8. Aunt Sally’s hat cost £1.25, how much change did she receive from £10.00 ?

hat1.jpg 9. In the hat cupboard, Aunt Sally’s hat span to the floor at a speed of 20 cm / 3 seconds. How long did he take to reach the ground, 3 m lower ? Give your answer in seconds and minutes.

hat1.jpg 10. Aunt Sally wanted to open a hat shop. She bought 150 hat boxes, but when she looked, she only had enough hats to fill 90% of them - how many is that ? How many boxes, therefore, were empty ?
