The Balmoral Mouse Who Wanted To Learn The Bagpipes

moused5.jpg

The mouse who lived underneath the moat bridge of Balmoral castle had a terrible problem that made him quite uptight … whenever he wanted to get some sleep, someone played music till midnight. They really were out of tune, perhaps they couldn’t read the music in the light of the moon ? Whenever they hit a wrong note, the Balmoral mouse though they sounded like a goat with a sore throat ! The Balmoral mouse called loudly out - “What was all this noise about ?. Can’t anybody get any sleep ? Where did you buy those bagpipes ? Were they going cheap ?”. His head ached - the music was half - baked. The castle door rattled and the moat bridge shaked. The Balmoral mouse decided to go and help - to make the singer’s singing sound better than a yelp ! He ran over the courtyard and up the bagpiper’s trouser leg. He tickled underneath his sporran, “Please stop !”, the bagpiper began to beg. When the Balmoral mouse sat on the windpipe, the music played was even more of a gripe. Instead of bass, all that could be heard, was a bellowing squeak … all around the world. The Balmoral mouse practised every day. It was him running up and down his kilt that caused bagpipers to always sway, some say. All around Edinburgh, the Balmoral mouse ran - once he was even almost shot, when he was fired at by the Mons Meg gun ! That really made him hit a high note and in the moat of Edinburgh castle, just about stayed afloat !

Waltzing Mathilda

dance.jpg

Waltzing Mathilda loved to dance … she’d waltz all over the world, given half the chance. Waltzing Mathilda started quite slow … and before was dancing (even though the music sometimes didn’t go). Waltzing Mathilda danced in the Sun … even though often, the limelight had gone. Before long, Waltzing Mathilda had danced half way across the world. In fact, Waltzing Mathilda’s dancing, was what made sure that the world twirled and swirled. Waltzing Mathilda next tried a foxtrot … she had made it half way to Africa by the time the music stopped. Waltzing Mathilda soon danced off course … within a day or so, her dancing had become considerably worse.

Monica The Harmonica

dance.jpg

When Monica the Harmonica blew a fuse, soon it became headline news. Monica the Harmonica huffed and puffed. Very soon, three birthday candles on her cake were snuffed ! When Monica the Harmonica whistled a note - tree submarines were no longer afloat ! She didn’t mean to be quite so ridiculous, but her musical harmonica was utterly tuneless. Monica the Harmonica tried her best, but not all her notes were upto the test. In fact, some of them were flatter than the rest !

It Takes Two To Tango !

bean1.jpg

Have you ever wondered why the Sun becomes orange at Sunset ? There were once two tangerines, who were the best pair of dancers that ever had been. No wonder that the tangerines got squashed … when the two tangerines often crashed. They really did have zesty a - peel, and often squirted zesty zeal. One tangerine rolled down a hill and bounced right off a windowsill. The tangerine flew into outer space, and on Planet Venus landed in place. They twist and turn on Mars as well, in a tango - orbit as they fell. The tango - ing tangerine bounced all the way to Houghton Green, where it bounced so high, it could hardly be seen. When the day was just about done, if you looked up high, you could see a tangerine Sun.

Twists and Turns, Swings and Roundabouts

dance.jpg

dance.jpg Twist

Paint or draw with chalk all the letters of the alphabet, then shout out a word. Pupils must jump between letters to spell the word correctly. Alternatively, the teacher shouts out the spelling of the word’s letters in the correct order and pupils guess what the word spells.

dance.jpg It’s Your Turn !

Resources - post it notes or small pieces of paper and pens. One member of the group takes a turn at being the group leader, being with the first letter of the alphabet. The group arranges themselves into alphabetical order. All other group members write as many words that they can think of with the same first initial as the leader, then work in teams to allocate the written words into categories. Some ideas may be -

verbs/adjectives/nouns or past/present/future or vegetable/mineral/animal/edible/non - edible.

Example, when it is Jackie’s turn - jump, jacket, jolt, jest, jeer, jealously.

dance.jpg Swings

This spelling game works best in conjunction with a swing. “It don’t mean a thing, if it ain’t got that swing !”. The teacher shouts out the verb root and the pupils add the “swing”. Example - GO and the pupils, reply “go - ing”.

dance.jpg Roundabouts

Allocate the group into two teams and think of as many words including “round” and including “about” as possible. The winning team thinks of the most.

* you can use the names “Twists”, “Turns”, “Swings” and “Roundabouts” as team names.

1/ 123 remainder 1
2/ 123 x (5 + 5 + 3 + 3 x 100) = 196 , 800
3/ (1.5 x 20) + (30 x 2) + 2 = 92 litres
4/ (3 x 247) / 3 x 2 = 741 / 3 x 2 = 494 hotdogs
5/ a) 200 x 4 = 800 b) 800 - (800 / 100 x 20) = 800 - 160 = 640
6/ 4 hours = 60 x 4 = 240 minutes / 5 = 48 songs
7/ 500 + (500 / 100 x 15) =500 + 75 = 575
