Witch Hazel and the Magic Hazelnut

caolm1du.jpg

Witch Hazel was helping Jack to sweep up the leaves underneath the beanstalk one Autumn. “What a waste of leaves, this is”, she remarked. “And a lot of hard work, too”, replied Jack. Mmm, thought Hazel, casting a magic spell on her brromstick to make it pick up the leaves a little more quick. The broomstick chugged slowly at first, then had a magical sweeping outburst. Before long, the magic brromstick had collected, two hundred acorns, four hundred conkers and a whole load of twigs … it brushedso hard that it almost swept off Witch Hazel’s hat (and also her witch’s wig). Jack came to see what was all the fuss, coughing and spluttering in clouds of beanstalk dust. He noticed on the ground, a hazelnut rolling around. The hazelnut too had picked up some magic from the broomstick and siin started performing magic tricks. “Gadzooks, a magic hazelnut” I wonder what magic it can do … or if it can make the broomstick magical, too.” Jack closed his eyes, and wished for a new pair of boots, he wished so hard, he fell over one of the beanstalk roots. With his eyes shut, he couldn’t see a thing, of course. As Jack went flying through the air, he dropped the hazelnut from his hand. So quickly Witch Hazel magicked a spell to help the hazelnut softly land. The magic hazelnut magicked Jack back up. It magicked a pot of steaming tea and a new, shiny, china cup. Accidentally, the magic hazelnut spilled some magic on the flowers, which started to grow for hours and hours. It even magicked April showers. So from the raincloud above the beanstalk splashed down raindrops with magical powers. No wonder that the beanstalk grew so fast … once it had got a magic hazelnut blast. So magic was the hazelnut, that it magicked the Sun to shine a bit brighter. It even magicked the birds, so that they flew a lot brighter. The witch used the magic hazelnut to wish for a new broom (perhaps one that would take her to the Moon with zoom). Pazazz ! Shazam ! But the spell went skew - wift and soon, there was even a giant mushroom. Within minutes a new broomstick started to appear … leaving her old, tattered broom making all the dead leaves disappear. The witch climbed onto her new broomstick and off she sped. She’d orbited to Mercury before on Pluto, going to bed. By the time Witch Hazel landed back at the beanstalk a week later, she’d brushed up a whole constellation of stars, a planet or two and some meteorites the size of a crater. Some of the moondust was magic as well … when she sprinkled some on the beanstalk, it glistened like the stars in the dell.

The Itchy Witch

caolm1du.jpg

As the itchy witch entered the kitchen, the itchy witch ditched the switch. Everything flitched. When the switch switched, soon everything in the kitchen twitched. Although it was very hard to tell, everything else started to switch as well ! The milk bottles in the fridge, rattled their milk tops and fell off the ridge. The cheese tumbled off the shelf, and the butter melted all by itself. The itchy witch waved her wand and three apples in the fruit bowl started to land. The witch’s itch really was that grand ! She itched again and a hat fell off the hatstand ! It must have been all the witch’s fleas, that tickled her toes and made her wobble her knobbly knees. When the itchy witch sniffed and sneezed - out popped two dozen fleas that jumped up and down wheezing “Yes, please !”. When the itchy witch spluttered, the fleas wings fluttered. A few of them started to take off … all because of the itchy witch’s tickled cough. “Atishoo ! Atichoo !”, she sneezed some more - and another four fleas jumped through the door, landing on the floor. The itchy witch wasn’t sure which flea, it was that made her itch continuously ! Trying to shake off the fleas, the itchy witch wriggled and giggled all day long, but only one or two were blown away when the wind blew strong. The itchy witch wriggled so much, her hat fell off in the rabbit hutch ! She tried to grab them, but they jumped out of her clutch ! The fleas were full of jumpin’ beans - they were the most pogo - ing fleas that ever had been ! The reason for this was that the witch was so itchy, whenever the fleas got twitchy.

Mag The Magician and the Magic Housekeeping Trick

izard.jpg

Mag the Magician was a magical chap, but the one thing he couldn’t do was keep on his hat. He was so busy jumping about, that he magicked everything … including the cat ! When he waved his magic wand, stardust made his magic grand. Very soon, he was quite surprised, to see everything around him metamorphisised. He even managed to spill a bit, of magic performing his magic tricks. In the kitchen without him looking, Everything started magically cooking. He didn’t notice, but even the bugs, started magically hopping on magic rugs. The vacuum cleaner started to work by itself, and the books tidied themselves up on the bookshelf. I bet you wish you had a magic wand like this, that would clean the house in a house - wizardry whizz.

The wicked witch had a magic mirror,

That magnified everything really well.

In fact, the magic mirror, magnified the witch as well.

The magic mirror magnified everything so miraculously,

It magnified everything endlessly.

Very soon, the witch’s hat was as big as an umbrella,

Quite a miraculous feat for a fortune - teller.

“Mirror, mirror, on the wall,

Who is the fairest of them all”.

The mirror was so magic,

That it magnified the hall ! Soon, all around the house,Everything was magnified,

(including the mouse !).

The magic mirror magnified the cat,

As well as every hat !

It magicked the rug,

And every single bug,

Soon the house was full of creepy crawlies,

Run up and down the stairs and the wallies.

Boo the Ghostly Poltergeist

gost.jpg

Boo the ghostly poltergeist was an awful host,

He scared all his guests away …

And burnt the toast.

All he wanted to do was to say “hello !”,

But they ran away down the stairs below.

The minute they saw Boo running round,

They headed off in the other direction,

Hiding, trying not to make a sound.

Boo the ghostly poltergeist was really so scary,

They felt as though they’d been shocked unfairly.

Everywhere Boo the ghostly poltergeist loudly boo -ed ,

Which his friends thought was really

incredibly rude.

“Boo !” his friend called once again,

As three of his friends headed off into the

rain.

Of course, everyone thought it was because

he was a ghostly poltergeist,

That everything around him went

crashing,

That things went bump in the night …

And usually ended up smashing !

But the real truth of the matter was,

Boo the ghostly poltergeist had a

boomerang that he couldn’t fire straight …

And that’s what shattered all the broken

plates when he stayed up late after eight !

When Boo threw his boomerang,

It made the telephone ring all by itself,

Dishes crashed to the floor,

And books fell off the bookshelf.

Although he tried with all the ghostly

power he’d got.

He really was a hopeless shot …

bomm.jpg4. Boo the ghost was so scary that he frightened away the mouse ! It ran 34.2 m upstairs, 2.5 m over the computer desk and 3.2 m under the bed. How far is that in total ?

bomm.jpg5. Boo the ghost’s boomerang got a real boost when the wind blew and it travelled 160% of it’s usual speed (see question 1). How long did it take to travel 500 m ?

bomm.jpg6. Boo the ghost bought his boomerang on holiday in Australia. It cost him 35 Australian $ - how much change did he receive from $50 Aus. ?

bomm.jpg7. If Boo the ghost’s boomerang span 8 times in 30 seconds as it flew - how many times did it spin in 5 minutes ?

bomm.jpg8. Boo the ghost’s boomerang hit a tree and 80% of the birds flew away. If there were 200 birds sitting on the tree, how many remained ?

bomm.jpg9. Boo the ghost’s boomerang hit the roof of the haunted house and knocked off 8 of the 800 roof tiles - what fraction, decimal and percentage is this ?

The Fairy At The Bottom of My Garden

fairy-3.jpg

The fairy at the bottom of my garden complained to the garden gnome,
You’ve just squashed my mushroom - go find somewhere else to make a home !”.
The fairy said that it just wasn’t neighbourly, to behave to noisily.
The fairy then moaned a little to the toad, “I agree” the black crow crowed.
Someone had eaten all the bread, it must have been the gnome (or perhaps the magpie instead)…
The fairy decided to build a shelter, that would keep out the heat, when the weather started to swelter.
The frog bounced up … to lend a hand … (though he didn’t really think that her shelter was that grand).

fairy-3.jpg1. The fairy was 2 / 3 rds of the height of the mushroom, which measured 15 cm high - so how tall was the fairy ?

fairy-3.jpg2. It took the fairy at the bottom of my garden 5 minutes to walk along one paving stone in the garden path. If she walked for 40 minutes, how many paving stones were in the garden path ?

fairy-3.jpg3. The fairy at the bottom of my garden met a slug and a caterpillar who told her the best to find fresh cabbage leaves … if one cabbage had 25 leaves - the fairy ate 2, the slug ate 1.3 leaves and the caterpillar ate 20 % - how many leaves were left ?

fairy-3.jpg4. The fairy at the bottom of my garden had a race with the grasshopper. Of course, the grasshopper won in 8 minutes (travelling at a speed of 4 daisies per minute). How many daisies did they pass in the race ? If the fairy travelled at 7 / 8 ths of this speed, how fast did she travel ?

fairy-3.jpg5. The fairy at the bottom of my garden went collecting pollen to make honey with the bees - if she collected 3 lumps of pollen in 2 minutes, how much pollen did she collect in 15 minutes ? One lump of pollen could make 3 mls of honey - so how much honey was made from this amount of pollen collected by the fairy ?

fairy-3.jpg6. She climbed up a molehill that measured 15 cm high and 10 cm wide. Using Pythagoras’ theory, work out how far she travelled up one side. Give your answer to two decimal places.

fairy-3.jpg7. The fairy then met a spider in the garden shed who said the fairy could use some of his thread to fix her torn dress, if she wishes. He sold her 5 cm of spidery thread at a cost of one gold coin per 0.25 cm. How much did she pay ? It took the fairy, with tiny fairy stitches 4 minutes to stitch 0.5 cm - how long did it take her to stitch the tear, measuring 2 cm ?

fairy-3.jpg8. The fairy took a wash in dew left by the rain on the flowers. In one rain shower, there were 18 puddles in the garden. How many puddles were there after 6 rain showers ?

fairy-3.jpg9. The fairy was almost knocked on the head by an acorn ! She had to dodge quickly out of the way … if there were 70 acorns on the oal tree at the bottom of the garden where the fairy lived and 60% fell to the ground - how many were left on the tree ?

fairy-3.jpg10. The fairy went picking flowers, but it was quite hard because they were so much bigger than her. It took her 7 minutes to put one into a vase - if the vase contained 5 flowers, how long did it take the fairy ?

Answers :
1. 15 / 3 x 2 = 10 cm
2. 40 / 5 = 8
3. 25 - (2 - 1.3 - (25 / 5 = 5) = 16.7) = 8.3 leaves
4. a) 8 x 4 = 32 daisies b) 4 / 8 x 7 = 3.5 daisies per minute
5. a) 15 / 2 = 7. 5 x 3 = 22.5 b) 22.5 / 3 = 7.5 mls
6. y 2 = (15 x 15) + (5 x 5) = 225 + 25 = / 250 = 5.81 cm
7. a) 5 / 0.25 = 20 b) 2 / 0.5 x 4 = 16 mins
8. 18 x 6 = 108
9. 70 - (70 / 100 x 60 = 42) = 28
10. 7 x 5 = 35 mins

The Spectre With No Spectacles

blob-3.jpg

I’ve never seen a ghost perform such a spectacular vanishing act,
As the spectre with no spectacles as a matter of fact …
His spectacles vanished into thin air …
Although he looked here and there, he couldn’t see them anywhere !
Whenever he went to take a look for something,
It disappeared and he couldn’t see a single thing !
The spectre went to take a better look …
But his spectacles went up in a puff of smoke !
So un - spectacular was the spectacle - less spectre, as a ghost,
That he decided to become a chef … spending his days cooking toast.
But still he couldn’t see further than his nose …
Perhaps his spectacles had fallen onto his toes ?
Without his spectacles, everything looked ghostly,
Actually, he really couldn’t see mostly !
He went to watch a football match, as a spectator,
But when he cheered for the wrong side,
He felt a real potato !
His phantom friends came to help, speculating that he’d left them on the bus,
Or perhaps in the supermarket when he’d been in a rush !
Specifically, his poor visibility completely eradicated the spectre’s sight - seeing capability …
So he came home early from his holiday.

1/ (200 x 7) + (150 x 7) + (150 x 7) = 1 400 + 1 050 + 525 = 2 975

2/ Total weight / total number of portions i.e. 800 / (2 + 3 + 5 = 10) = 80 then share this in the same ratio … 160 : 240 : 400 As a check, add them all up ! If you answer equals the original weight - you’ve got the answer right !

3/ 1 000 - (1000 / 2 + 500 / 100 x 25) = 1 000 - 655 = 345 ml

4/ (3 x 24 x 7) + (3 x 24 x 7 x 2) + ((3 x 24 x 7) + (3 x 24 x 7 x 2) x 3) = 504 + 1008 + (504 +1008 x 3 = 4 536) = 6 , 048

5/ (60 / 5 = boo per hour = 12 x 24 = 28 8) + (288 x 2 = 576) + 24 = 888

6/ 235 x (5 x 2 ) = 2 , 350

7/ 2 x 24 x 30 = 1 440

8/ 6 + 12 + 10 + 1 = 29

9/ 25 x 4 + 17 + 62 + 4 + (4 x 4 ) = 199

10/ 4 x 6 + 16 + 1 + 1 + 2 = 44
