Willy Nilly

cag9unst.jpg

Willy Nilly loved football though he never once scored a goal. In fact, whenever he saw a goal post, he thought it was a hole made by a mole ! Willy Nilly had knobbly sneeze, that made the ball wobble in the breeze. No wonder that he always missed the shot because his knobbly legs made the ball wobble rather a lot. When Willy Nilly was in the team, the championship was the fastest lost, it seemed. Willy Nilly’s football shirt was so out of shape that it was more like a skirt ! The last I heard, Willy Nilly was still trying to shoot, though when he kicked the ball, off fell his boot ! Willy Nilly thought perhaps snooker could be a better game, where he could get higher scores than nil, and not have to hang his head in shame. Next, Willy Nilly had a go at hockey, though he slipped in the snow (the last time I saw him, he was dodging to and fro). Willy Nilly’s favourite game, was rugby, which was where he made a famous name. Willy Nilly’s scores were soon so high, when he kicked the ball, it flew off into the sky. Willy Nilly added the scores together … it came to over five hundred … despite the snowy weather.

Slim Jim

cag9unst.jpg

Slim Jim was so thin, he fell down a manhole without a lid. Everyone asked if he was hid ? And looked around to see where he had slid. Of course, he felt a bit of a failure, until he ended up in Australia ! He skated on a little bit further and in the North Pole landed in the snow - now he only had one more direction that he could go ! Over the Pacific, his sliding was terrific … he turned right at the Cape of Good Hope - and an antelope asked him if he needed a rope to help get back up the slope !

Sultan Sultana and Ali Baba

genie21.jpg

Sultan Sultana had a problem - he couldn’t tie a knot in his turban. It weighed a ton and regularly came undone. Although he practised on a piece of string, when he tried to tie it, he could not knot a single thing. Sultan Sultana first tried glue - but it only stuck to his fingers and the knot he made, simply would not knot into two. It just wouldn’t do. Next, he tried a hammer and a big, iron nail - but when he brought a spanner - the knot he made started to fail. When he used a saw - it fell onto the floor. So he folded his turban back into four. He asked Ali Baba to bring his magic lamp - and wished for a knot with all his might, then tried on his turban like sticking on a stamp ! Soon, Sultan Sultana was so stuck up - he’d picked up three paper clips and a broken, paper cup. He tried to tie on his turban by wrapping around a piece of rope - but when he accidentally sat on Ali Baba’s magic lamp -”Abracadabra !”, the rope turned into a cobra which started to elope ! Sultan Sultana’s turban just wouldn’t stay on his head. It was so uncomfortable wobbling about, that he tried a ribbon from an Easter bonnet instead. Not knowing where to begin, Ali Baba brought the Sultan a pin - he took it from the box and stuck it in ! “OUCH !”, Sultan Sultana cried out in disdainful pain - just as Ali Baba stuck it in again. Finally, Sultan Sultana used an elastic band - soon, in his turban, he was looking quite grand. But the turban knot still did not stay still - the last I heard, Sultan Sultana received a wobbling bill. Everyone thought that it must have been wine - that made him wobble so much that he got a fine !

genie21.jpg

Read the passage again and answer the following questions :

1. Name two things in the story that are made from paper.

2. Name two things in the story that Sultan Sultana used to try and fix his turban.

3. Name one kind of hat named in the story.

4. Name one animal named in the story.

5. Name one tool that might be found in a toolbox in the story.

1. 1 (5 x 100 / 50 = 10) = 10

2. 5 + (5 / 100 x 20 = 1) = 6 m

3. 500 / 40 = 12.5

4. One part = (3 x 60 + 30 = 210) / 4 = 52.5, therefore, 52.5 : 157.5 mins

5. 12 + (12 / 4 = 3) = 15 cm

6. 200 + (200 / 100 x 5 = 10) = 205 cm = 2.05 m

7. a) 1.25 (3 + 2 = 5) = £6.25 ; b) 10 - 6.25 = £3.75

Eva On Everest Who Only Ever Wanted To Rest

ant-2.jpg

All Eva ever wanted to do, was to climb to the top of Everest and have a look at the view. But Eva was only a miniscule ant - she didn’t get higher than a rock, before she started to pant. She rested on a pebble until she’d caught her breath - then started to climb again - step by step - despite the rain. It wasn’t long, of course, before het foot started to slip and her climb quickly turned into a slippery trip ! She bought a pick axe, to help her scale the ice and asked for a step up from a very friendly lice. Very soon, she was a hundred metres above the sea - not bad, for an ant, to be looking down on a bee. Around about a thousand feet, Eva stopped for a picnic treat to eat and to rest her tired, weary feet (all six of them !). A butterfly passing by gave her a buttery biscuit for Eva to try. She tucked in - Mmmm - it tasted just right - then she settled down for the night. At dawn the next day, Eva was once more on her way. Her knapsack was heavy and she started to slip back - she landed with a “BUMP !” upon the cold, stoney track. Being an ant was tougher than she first thought - perhaps a rope, or a hot air balloon, was what she should have brought.

The Rest of Everest

Write a mathematical equation to show your working out to the following maths problems. In each of the following questions, there is a division, addition, subtraction, multiplication, decimal, fraction, percentage, average and ratio, velocity, time, speed and distance sum. It may help to work out which maths technique you should use before you commence.

ant-2.jpg 1. If on the first leg of her 20 km journey up Everest, Eva stopped every 1500 metres, how many times did she stop ?

ant-2.jpg 2. If Eva climbed 2 km but slipped back 500 metres - how far above above sea - level was she ? Give your answer in km and m.

ant-2.jpg 3. On day two, Eva climbed 0.4 of the distance that she climbed on day one. If she climbed 5 km on day one

a) How far did she climb on day two ?

b) How far above above sea - level was she in total ?

ant-2.jpg 4. If Eva climbed for one third of the 3 km journey then stopped for a drink, how far had she travelled ?

ant-2.jpg 5. Eva ate 20% of the 10 sandwiches that she had brought at breakfast.

a) What percentage was left for lunch and dinner ?

b) How many had she eaten ?

ant-2.jpg 6. Eva gave 1 : 4 of the biscuits that she had brought to a seagull - if she brought fifteen in total,

a) Work out the actual ratio.

b) How many did she give away ?

c) How many did she have left to eat herself ?

ant-2.jpg 7. Eva climbed for 3 hours and stopped for 20 minutes. If each break lasted 5 minutes, how often did she stop ? Write an algebraic equation to solve this question.

ant-2.jpg 8. If Eva walked at a speed of 2.5 km per hour, how far did she travel in 5 hours ?

ant-2.jpg 9. If Eva walked at a speed of 3 km / hour, how long did it take her to travel 18 km ?

ant-2.jpg 10. Eva walked 2 km on Monday, 200 metres on Tuesday, 20 km on Wednesday, 5.2 km on Thursday and 12 km on Friday.
