Alma Cross The Cross Albatross

desert-island.jpg

Alma Cross the albatross was cross. In fact, he was positively irate … no - one knew what had upset him so much, but anyway, things weren’t that great. When Alma Cross the albatross was grumpy - he moaned. He moaned about the weather and about the cold … he moaned so much his jaw ached, or so that is what I’m told. The late bus made his cross and so did the beanstalk when he slipped on the moss. He was such an unhappy chap, he complained when the beanstalk insects awoke him from his nap. Alma arrived on a Boeing 747 - with a first class ticket that brought him to the beanstalk. In his suitcase he had packed, sunglasses, a swimsuit and a map. When Alma Cross the albatross came to stay, everything it seemed, got in a flap his way. The ladybird said that he would love to be, just like Alma the albatross and fly from the tree. So he tried to show the animals how to fly … but no matter how much they flapped their wings, they only fell down from the sky. Soon even the bunny rabbit, had Alma the albatross’s flying habit. But no matter how much he leapt about - he still remained in the same spot.

The Hermit Crab With No Home

sea-animals.jpg

The hermit crab with no home, spent all day in the sea, looking for better places that he could live with his family. No wonder he was so crabby ! At first, he tried sleeping under a rock, but the rock wasn’t that comfortable and the electric eel gave him a shock. He decided to look for another place some more, around the quay, on the seashore. The hermit crab saw a sandcastle on the beach, though it was a little out of reach. He decided to settle down … but when the wind was high, he was soon, overblown. Off he scuttled, to look again, he rested on a ship’s anchor, but was awoken by the clunk of the chain. He jumped over a puddle and skid down a drain. Then, the hermit crab saw a canoe, that perhaps he could sleep in for a night or two. The hermit crab crawled through a hole, but was promptly chased off by a Dover sole. Anyway, indeed, the mermaid agreed, beneath a boat wasn’t that great a place to live, so off he slid. Instead he hid in seaweed with a squid. The squid complained to the octopus, that hermit crab made such a fuss. The hermit was crab was really forlorn - he awoke early and had set off by dawn. Next, he tried a sea - shell, but he didn’t fit inside all that well. The hermit crab still had no place to hide and it was rather cold outside. As the crab chattered, his claws clattered. When he rolled over, the seashell shattered. Once more, he was homeless again - looking for somewhere to sleep in the pouring rain. When the tide came in, the hermit crab drifted off from the turf, floating towards the ocean on the surf. On the waves, he tossed and sway. Being a hermit crab, he sailed clean away, looking for somewhere that he could stay ! In the salty water, as he took a drink, suddenly the hermit crab started to sink. There at the bottom of the sea, was the best home for a hermit crab that there could possibly be : a treasure chest, from an old pirate ship - that none of the divers had spotted when they took a dip. In his new home, the hermit crab was in hermit crab heaven - there even were gold coins, that he counted until seven.

Winky The Dinky Minky Whale

sea-animals.jpg

Winky was dinky - there was no point in trying to hide it. Whenever he hid behind a rock, he was two inches less wide than it ! Winky was so small - he could hardly be seen at all. He didn’t want to spend the rest of his life as small fry - to be so tiny made him blubber and cry. Winky went looking for sea weed for his tea - actually he was the biggest weed in the sea ! The sharks and jellyfish thought this was a laugh - a minky whale who was better off swimming in a puddle or a bath ! No wonder Winky looked pale for a whale, unlike all the other powerful wails, Winky only had a third of a centimetre tail with which to set sail. He regularly was blown off course whenever there was a gale. Winky the minky whale was rather dinky, he crashed into the seashore when the lighthouse was on the blinky. Winky admired all the other whales than swam about in the ocean - so he asked the mermaid to fix him a growing - up, getting - big magic potion. The mermaid looked around for things to put in it … a starfish, a seashell, splash of seawater and some treasure as well. Whilst the mermaid swirled around the magic lotion, on the quayside, there was quite a commotion. The sailors all came to watch. One or two even gave the mermaid a fish from their catch. Just as the potion came to the boil, Winky the dinky minky whale, guzzled it all down whole. Mmmmmm. It tasted quite nice, though he did drink so much that he burped once or twice. The cockles and mussels came to see, if it improved the dinky whale’s size - so he was bigger than a pea. Gradually, Winky the dinky whale grew and grew … within an hour, he was larger than a barge, then after a day, the harbour, too ! Just when Winky thought his extension was about to stop, it started to rain … and he shrunk an inch with each PLOP ! Fearing that the mermaid’s magic enlargement potion would turn out a flop … Winky the Dinky whale swallowed another drop. Thank heavens for mermaid magic - that kept Winky growing. Soon, over the horizon, only the spurt he was blowing was showing !

The Final Fish From Finland With The Finest Fin

fish-2.jpg

A fish swam all the way from Finland to come and see, whether it was true that every animal of the world lived in Jack’s beanstalk tree. He had a race with the plaice. The fish swam at such a rate, that he beat the skate. He left the haddock sitting on a rock and the eel on the fishing reel. About half way along on the trip, they stopped for a while for a picnic and a drippy dip. It turned out to be quite a slippy flip on the sunstrip. The fish decided to have a competition, to see who was finest and fastest at completing their maths revision. The final was won by the fish with the finest fin - who, of course, swam better than anyone - and had finished before the others set off and begin.

fish-2.jpg

Maths Grand Finale

fish-2.jpg 1. If the fish swam at a speed of 2.5 km / hour, how long did it take to swim across the ocean, 300 km ?

fish-2.jpg 2. Downstream the finest fish swam one fifth faster. If he swam at a speed of 2 km / hour upstream, how long did it take him to swim 10 km a) upstream b) downstream ?

fish-2.jpg 3. On the way from Finland, the fish swam past 200 other fish - one quarter were dolphins, 0.1 were sharks, 50% were cod, 3 : 20 were octopuses. Calculate how many of each type of fish the finest fish swam past.

fish-2.jpg 4. If the finest fish from Finland swam past a rock every 50 metres, how many rocks is that in a journey of

a) 1 km

b) 5 km

c) 15 km

fish-2.jpg 5. The fish swam 2.4 km North, 3.2 km East, 1.8 km West then 5.2 km South. How far is that in total ?

Battleships

battleships16.jpg

battleships16.jpg Preparation : This game can be used to teach either

Maths grids and / or English spelling. Draw a table with ten rows and ten

columns. Mark the upper horizontal line alphabetically A - J and vertical

line numerically 1 - 10. Then mark in the following as you wish (you may

choose to place them apart or a crossword pattern or - but remember a hit

can then sink two ships at once) :

BATTLESHIP

MARINER

TRAWLER

FERRY

SUBMARINE

SAILING BOAT

DINGHI

AIRCRAFT CARRIER

battleships16.jpg Amunition : Each player has an arsenal of shots that they

can fire - 5 cannonballs (which sinks the chosen grid square and one

square either side) and 10 bullets (singular squares).

battleships16.jpg To Play : Each player fires a shot in turn at the opponent’s

battle zone (grid). For example - 4D (which can be either a hit or miss

depending on the drawn location of the battleships). If the player is

successful and a “hit” is scored, part of the ship (one square) is sunk AND

the player can then have a free go, trying to sink another square (or part of

the ship, stopping when a) he misses or b) the entire ship is sunk).

battleships16.jpg Scoring :Each letter knocked out scores one point.

Example - BATTLESHIP = 10 points.

battleships16.jpg Variation : You can, of course, use any theme entitling the

game as you wish - such as “Trawling For Fish” (where the “shots fired”

are fishing nets and worms catching different types of seafish) or “Sports

Championships” (firing a ball or javelin) etc.

battleships16.jpg

D - Day

Circle the letter “D” in the above passage.

battleships16.jpg

Day By Day

Write as many words as you can think of containing the word “day”. Example - today.

Celia Seal The Ceiling Seal Who Got Sealed and Lucille the Loose Seal

seal7.jpg

Celia Seal always stole the show. Whenever there was sealing to be done, Celia always tried - but had trouble to get up and go. Soon, Celia Seal was so stuck up, her flippers got stuck when she drank tea from a cup. When Celia Seal sat on a rock, she got stuck … and couldn’t get off ! Her tail was soon stuck as well, when she knocked on a door, her nose stuck to the bell ! Once, Celia Seal ate a sandwich made from jam, but it covered her whiskers, so she was stuck like a clam ! Celia Seal was so busy sealing, she got stuck to the carpet, then stuck to the ceiling ! She went to decorate her house with wallpaper and glue, then, before very long, the bucket and brush were stuck, too ! For the walrus’s birthday, Celia Seal tried sending a card, but there was so much stickiness, she soon was stuck quite hard ! Celia Seal bought some tape, but within minutes, she’d sellotaped a plate ! Celia Seal tried to get unstuck … by looking up sticky toffee in a recipe book … but to unstick her flippers, an hour took ! And soon all the pages couldn’t be shook !
