Hey Diddle, Diddle Median Means Middle …

Hey diddle, diddle,

Let’s now try Maths in a riddle,

Singing, “Hey diddle, diddle,

You tickle me in the middle,

In Maths lessons, teachers talk a riddle,

When I need the answers, it’s easier to fiddle”.

Pied Piper

clown.jpg

The Pied Piper of Hamlin didn’t mean to get chased by rats. All he wanted was to play is music around the town and up and down in the flats. But his music drifted wide and far. Through the windows and out of the door, left ajar. From the drainpipes, the rats started to come out - they followed the Pied Piper upto the roundabout. One of the rats had such a long tail, when he waved it, the passers - by thought that it was a taxi he was trying to hail. When the Pied Piper hit a high note, three windows of a shop smashed and in the harbour, he sunk a boat. The Pied Piper played music some more … and the rats quickly followed to come and listen to the score. As the rats started to follow, one by one, the Pied Piper’s picnic tea they started to swallow. First the rats chomped his sandwiches, then a biscuit or two - very soon, they gulped in tune - and there was nothing much left to chew. The Pied Piper, realising the problem was his play, decided to try beating a drum rather than play his flute all day. But when he tried four rats scuppered out of the way ! The idea didn’t work that well … when he put the drum down, he almost squashed a rat as well. Mmmmm. The Pied Piper pondered long and hard - how to avoid rats, yet remain a bard. He studied guitar and the bassoon, but he was hopeless, the rats called him an out - of - tune baffoon ! He wanted to be the best living orchestral fellow, so next, the Pied Piper practised the cello. First he played softly, then awfully loud - hardly surprising that his music drew an even bigger crowd.

Milly, Molly, Mandy

gal-2.jpggal-2.jpggal-2.jpg

Milly, Molly, Mandy loved to eat sugary candy. In fact, at night, she dreamed of the stuff, too, even when there was none handy at well gone half past two. Actually, by that time of the night, only in order to sleep tight, Milly only molly - cuddled Mandy, to make sure that Molly’s her dreams were as sweet as sugary candy. From where in these words someone took a big bite, can you help her get her spellings right ?

Bart Simpleton

bart2.jpg

Bart Simpleton had pimples, he didn’t know what to do … whenever he looked in the mirror, his pimples simply just grew (as pimples do !). He simply couldn’t decide why or how, he had become so pimply, but when he hid behind dark spectacles, they began to show. As his face got redder and redder, his eyes opened wide and he gave a shudder. All over his arms and his legs, Bart Simpleton was soon covered in spots - like a bird’s spotted eggs. One thing was for sure, his face was getting spotted more and even more. As Bart Simpleton looked down at his toes, he could just about see spots glowing on his nose ! Soon, he was so completely dotty, that everywhere he went looked spotty ! Bart Simpleton discussed the matter with his friend a bit - who said he had an idea that would put an end to it ! He should put his spots in an envelope and send it off to a pit !

bart2.jpg

Dot To Dot

Draw dots on the picture of Bart. Match up the pimples from ear to ear in the same order as the words below :

ear - elbow - knee

eye - stomach - foot

hand - eyebrow - shoulder

knee - nose - elbow

buttock - chin - nose

finger -shoulder - elbow

knee - hand - head

thigh - chest - elbow

bart2.jpg

1. If Bart Simpleton had 200 spots but when he put on cream, 10% disappeared, how many were left ?

2. In one day, Bart Simpleton’s grew in a ratio of 1 : 3. If he originally had 80 spots, how many did he have left ?

3. Bart Simpleton had 400 spots on his legs, but one fifth were covered by his short trousers and 0.1 - how many and what fraction, decimal and percentage of the spots on his legs were showing ?

4. Bart Simpleton had 50 more spots on his arms than on his face. If he had 80 spots on his face, how many did he have on his arms ?

5. Bart Simpleton also had a polka dot hat - which had even more spots on it than a spotty leopard cat ! When he wore his hat, the spots on his forehead disappeared. This was one third of the total number of 90 spots on his head.

a) How many spots disappeared ?

b) How many spots could be seen ?

1. 125 - (125 / 3 = 41.6 r) = 83.33 r cm

2. 80 + (80 / 10 x 2 = 16) = 96 g

3. 20 x 7 = 140 mins = 2.3 r hours

4. 3000 + (3000 / 100 x 20 = 600) = 3 600 m / hour

5. 24 / 2 = 12 cm

6. 15 - 2 = 13 cm

7. 5 / 2 = £2.50

8. 20 - (20 / 4 = 5) = 15

9. 250 + (250 / 5 = 50) = 300 m

Paddington Beard grew a beard,

It was the longest beard ever, or so I heard.

Paddington Beard brushed it daily,

He put it in curlers and dyed it greyly.

He had a trim,

So that it wasn’t untidy,

Then he combed a part in it,

And put a clip until Friday.

Paddington Beard liked his wig,

Even though the curls weren’t that big.

Cinderella Maths

Cinderella wanted to go to the ball, but she didn’t have anything to wear at all. She tried on a coat - which didn’t match her shoes and the hole in her socks, made her cry the blues. In fact, her ballgown hardly made headline news. What was poor Cinders going to do ? When the only thing she had to wear on her feet, were Wellington boots, size twenty - two ? Then, just to top it all, Cinderella slipped when she got to the ball ! She really wasn’t used to wearing high heels. Her knees wobbled as she landed with squeals ! Her new pair of shoes were so utterly fantastic, she skated on ice, performing a back - flip trick. Luckily Prince Charming was charming indeed and caught her just as she was about to fall in the weeds. He swirled Cinderella round and upside down in musical time, the pair only stopped dancing at midnight, when the clock began to chime.

 Footloose Maths Game

Write a mathematical equation to show your working out to the following maths problems.

 1. With a skip, jump and a hop, she quickly nipped down to the local shoe shop. If she paid £25.99 for a pair of dancing shoes, how much change did she receive from £50.00 ?

 2. On the rack, there were eight pairs of size six shoes, ten pairs of size seven and twelve pairs of size eight.

a) How many shoes were there in total ?

b) Work out the average size of shoes for sale (mean).

c) What size was the shoe in the middle of the rack (median) ?

d) What is the difference between the smallest and largest shoe for sale (mode) ?

 3. She tried on a pair of slippers, which were one tenth bigger than her feet. If her feet measured 20 cm, how big were the slippers ?

 4. Cinders polished her shoes for ten minutes every day. How long did she spend polishing in one week ?

 5. Her high heels made Cinders 12 cm taller. If she usually was 157 cm tall, how high was she wearing her new shoes ?

 6. Cinderella knit a new pair of socks to match her new shoes. If she knit at a rate of 4 cm per hour, how long did it take her to finish both 24 cm socks ?

 7. She used 150 cm of wool for every 2cm. On one ball of wool, there was 20 m and she had 5 balls of wool.

a) How much wool did she use knitting both pairs of socks ? Give your answer in cm and m.

b) How many balls of wool did she use ?

c) How much wool did she have left ?

 8. There were 250 pairs of shoes in the shop. 40% of them were displayed in the shop window. How many were on the window and on the racks ?

 9. Work out the volume in cubic cm of the shoe box that Cinderella took her new pair of slippers home in if it measured 12 cm wide, 10 cm high and 25 cm long.

 10. The slippers weighed 2.5 kg and the box added 0.2 of this amount onto it. How much did Cinderella carry home in her shopping bag in total ?

Prince Charming’s Lost Charm

Prince Charming lost his charm, he couldn’t think where he’d put it. It wasn’t in his pocket and he asked everyone of they knew where he’d put it. He looked under the table and in the cake tray, too. It seemed that it wasn’t anywhere and he didn’t know what to do. Prince Charming looked on the dancefloor. He got everyone to quickstep a little bit more. But his charm was lost somewhere, it wasn’t on the table, or on by the stairs. It had been a present from the Queen of Moldavia, who’d given it to him as a present, when he had come to save her. A diamond pendant, with a golden chain, he was adamant that he’d put it on … And started to look again.
