The Total Totem Pole

teepee-2.jpg

The totem pole as totally fed up … he’d been blown over by the wind three times and couldn’t get back up ! When In’jun Joe came along, the wind was still blowing really quite strong. But nothing could get the totem pole to stand straight … and In’jun Joe was getting irate. Can you help In’jun Joe ? What are the angles that the totem pole should go ? The angle shown in the diagrams is how far the totem pole is off the ground - in order to stand the totem pole upright, how much further in an anti - clockwise motion should In’jun Joe push the totem pole ?

teepee-2.jpg

1. Work out the remaining angle that the totem pole should travel to stand at a 90 degree right angle.2. What type of angle is the totem pole ? 45 , 75 , 55 , 25

3. If to move 5 degrees takes 50 joules of energy, how much energy does In’jun Joe use a) per angle ?

b) in total ?

4. To move 10 degrees takes 5 minutes, how much time does it take In’jun Joe to move,

a) each totem pole ?

b) all totem poles in total ?

5. Does the totem pole stay the same length ? Write an explanation for your theory.

Resources

50 cardsone dictionary for each team.

Divide the class into two teams and give each team a dictionary. The first team chooses an unusual word from the dictionary and writes the “true” definition on the opposite side of the card. Each member of the opposing team then writes a possible definition for each card’s word. Both teams then vote for a definition. If they get it right, they earn a point for their team. The person whose definition is chosen, also gets a point.

The rattlesnake in the ravine, scared the cattle so much, that they screamed ! “Rattling rattlesnakes !”, cried In’jun Joe as another rattling rattlesnake crawled slow below. Even Tom Tomahawk was getting terrified (and it started to show !). Soon, there were so many rattlesnakes crawling around - that even brave Wild Bill wouldn’t step on the ground. Governor Oven wanted rattlesnake for tea - but of course, Sheriff Hotdog said he would like hotdogs, preferably ! “Even a rattlesnake stew would do !” said the coy coyote (”With a slice of bread or two”). As the old maid who made marmalade went to find a pot, the hungry animals mouths were watering quite a lot. You wouldn’t believe how much ketchup that they’d got ! The chipmunks, of course, said they would like chips - covered with salt and vinegar - and saucy dips ! Soon the pans were rattling as well … along with all the rattlesnakes down in the dell. Around the campfire, there was so much rattling, that off the wheel of the wagon wheel fell ! Mmmmm … rising above the teepee, there really was a really delicious smell. Some of the wizards and witches had a taste - the rattlesnake stew was swell ! Better even than Mississippi mud pie - even the chipmunks came along from the blue lagoon to have a try. Triganometry Trigger galloped up - which rattled the ground more than an Earthquake and the rattling broke a cup ! As the rattlesnake’s rattling shook the floor, Pocohontas cooked up some more (In’ jun Joe really didn’t like rattlesnake raw). When news got out that the rattlesnake stew was piping hot, as quick as flash, Jesse James rolled up like a shot ! From the saloon in town, he sat down - but he wished he’d not - he sat on a cactus and kicked over the lot in the pot !

The S Express That Brought Coal From Colorado

thothomas-tank.jpg

The S Express came in every day - carrying coal and horse’s hay. The S Express was quicker than ever, whenever the engine driver had done his maths homework and was feeling clever. The switches switched and the dials clicked - the engine driver’s buttons flicked. The passengers in the carriage behind - thought it hilarious as the clock dial began to unwind. The S Express chugged happily on, until all the petrol was almost gone. No wonder that the cola in the catering carriage fizzed … the bottles rattled as the engine whizzed !

Tom Tomahawk, The Hawkeye Scout

indian.jpg

Tom Tomahawk was one of In ‘ jun Joe’s scouts. He was the one who went looking for things, whenever In ‘ jun Joe couldn’t be bothered to go out. He used the cactus on the top of the hill as his lookout - and drove himself potty going round and about. He followed footprints in snowy weather and in Summer, went collecting headdress feathers. Tom Tomahawk loved to walk - though it was quite lonely in the hills and there was no - one with whom to talk. One time, he looked up and heard a hawl squawk, being an In ‘ jun, he understood hawk talk.

Wild Bill’s Horse Triganometry Trigger

cowboy.jpg

Wild Bill’s horse was running around in circles one day. No wonder his head was in a spin and he soon lost his way. He circled this way, then circled that, his rein was soon in knots and he landed on the cat !  Wild Bill soon was quite mad, too ! He jumped up and down, spilling his stew. He had such a lot of maths homework to do, now he’d never find the answer to one million times one million and two ! Then he realised, he needn’t have feared and suddenly all his maths problems quickly disappeared. As he studied the horse’s trot, he noticed the arc and median rather a lot. He called his horse “Trigger ! Over here”. Along he galloped … making the answers clear. Until this time, Wild Bill never understood triganometry. But using Trigger’s rein, he answered his maths more understandably.

cowboy.jpg Use the following formula to help you to work out the questions below : Cosine, sine and tangent.

cowboy.jpg 1. If Trigger’s rein measured 2 metres long, work out the area of the ranch that he circled.

cowboy.jpg 2. Trigger ran from the gate (East) to the bucket of water (North) (one quarter of this area) - what is that in square m ? Draw a diagram to show your working out to this problem.

cowboy.jpg 3. Wild Bill made a cake that measured 50 cm across the middle (the diameter) but his horse Trigger ate one sixth -

a) How much cake did the horse eat ?

b) Work out the area of the cake that was left.

cowboy.jpg 4. If Wild Bill was stood at the ranch and Trigger walked to him via the gate, how far did he walk ?

In’ jun Joe In The Blue Lagoon

croc-1.jpg

In’ jun Joe went fishing one day, he wanted to see how many fish he could catch in the bay. He did catch a few, but some swam away. In’ jun Joe brought his rod and net, just to see how many tiddlers he could get. Although, he didn’t expect there to be a hole, I bet. In’ jun Joe had a can of worms, inside they wriggled and squiggled and squirmed. In’ jun Joe put one on the line, then sat back awaiting, whistling a tune, just to pass the time. He fell asleep because the blue lagoon was so hot, after an hour, he looked to see what he’d got. What a surprise ! He couldn’t believe his eyes, inside the net there were twenty fish (and french fries !). In ‘ jun Joe counted his catch … fifty piranhas, a tortoise and a jellyfish (He wondered if they’d all fit in his dish !). In’ jun Joe thought he’d save them till later, he hadn’t even spotted the approaching alligator. When he looked around, he saw him crawling on the ground ! In ‘ jun Joe cried “Watch out ! There is an alligator hunting about !”. Whilst he had fallen asleep, one or two snakes also started to creep from the deep. “Yikes !”, yelled Joe, scarpering off, he jumped in his canoe and quickly took off ! The river rapids weren’t that far away, his canoe boat tossed and started to sway. Clinging onto one of the oars, In ‘ jun Joe navigated some more. Luckily he managed to avoid the rocks, and glided safely into the docks.fish-2.jpg The Piranha Maths Quiz

In’jun Joe’s Fort

Write ten sentences including the word “fort” and the word “fought”  - do you know the difference ?

© Jacqueline Richards 2007

Answers :

1. 200 / 10 x 8 = 160

2. 10 x 20 / 60 = 3.3 hours = 3 hours and 20 mins

3. 250 - (250 / 100 x 70 = 175) = 75 cm

4. 2 x (9 / 3) = 6

5. 1.2 x 5 = 6m

6. 200 / 50 = 4 hours

7. 15 (200 / 20 = 10) = 150

8. 300 - 80 = 220 cm

9. 500 - (12 x 9 = 10 8) = 492

10. 1/10th = 0.1 = 10%

11. 12 x 0.5 = 6 km

12. 1 : 3

13. 300 - (300 / 10 x 2 = 60 cm) = 240 cm

14. a) 20 hours b) 4 / 10 = 0.4 hours = 24 mins c) 24 x 7 = 168 mins = 2 hrs 40 mins d) 24 : 216 mins e) 0.11 r = 11.11 r % 15. 60 / 10 x 4 = 24
