The World’s Biggest Balloon (comprehension exercise)

The world’s biggest balloon was as big as the moon. It took three years to sew it’s seams all together and days to fill it with enough puff to blow it up, a hurricaine to lift it and a tornedo to make it sail. The world’s biggest balloon could carry five hundred people in one go, in a basket the size of a rain forest. When the world’s biggest balloon floated off, it was the highest thing that flew in the sky – higher than the trees and even higher than a sky – scraper. When the world’s biggest balloon passed overhead, it cast a dark circle shadow over the hillside. It eclipsed the moon and you could only just about see the stars. The raindrops bounced off it’s sides and landed in a puddle the size of a lake. When the world’s biggest balloon landed, it squashed a playing field of grass and twenty – four cricket players were last seen rushing away to find shelter. It rolled over and three houses disappeared. The world’s biggest balloon was made of rubber so bouncy that the world’s biggest balloon rickocheted between the Himalayan mountains and popped on Everest. The world’s biggest balloon was so big that when it popped, there were rumbles on Mars and Saturn’s rings began to swin even faster. A pop so loud that it shook the trees and even made skyscrapers tremble. The shadow of the world’s biggest balloon fell across the hillside … and as it flew overhead, darkness fell. The world’s biggest balloon was so multi – coloured that it could even be confused with a rainbow … only the biggest and most enormous rain cloud could bring the world’s biggest balloon back down to Earth with a bump.
