The Flea Who Went To School

flea2.jpg

It took the flea three days to walk the mile to the school gate,
No wonder, with such short legs, that he was always late !
The school bell made him jump,
He hit his head on the desk with a terrible thump !
He almost fell inside his satchel looking for a pen …
And nearly fell off the chair, trying to reach for his textbook, every now and then …
The flea who went to school of course,
Got the lowest marks in class,
Mainly because he couldn’t see over the tops of shoes,
… so he never did understand velocity and mass …
None of his sums ever added up …
At lunch break, eating his packed lunch,
He almost fell into his cup !
The flea who went to school broke almost every rule …
But he still thought school was rather cool !

Write a mathemtical equation to show your working out to the following maths problems.

1/ If the flea could jump 0.02 cm in every leap, how many leaps did his 13 metre trip down the school corridor take ?

2/ If the flea took 2.3 minutes to turn over one page in his textbook, how long did it take him to reach the end of the book with 50 pages ?

3/ If it took 3 fleas to hold one pen, how many fleas did it require to lift the entire pencil case containing 15 pencils and 4 erasers (which were half the weight of one
pencil) ?

4/ If the flea took 12 minutes to munch 2 square centimetres of one sandwich, how long did it take him to eat the whole sandwich, which was 8 x 10 cm ? Give your answer in minutes and hours.

5/ The flea was 0.02% smaller than his lunch box. Work out the volume of his rectangular lunch box (which was 10 cm wide x 15 cm long x 5 high), then work out the size of the flea.

6/ The flea took so long writing the answers in his exams, that he only managed to complete 5% of the 300 questions – how many is that ?

7/ The flea got hiccups, so jumped 90% higher … if he normally could jump 2.3 cm – how high could he jump with hiccups ?

Answers :
1/ 13 / 0.02 = 650 jumps
2/ 2.3 x 50 = 115 mins
3/ (15 x 3) + (4 x 3 / 2) = 45 + 6 = 51 fleas
4/ 8 x 10 = 80 / 2 x 12 = 480 minutes / 60 = 8 hours
5/ a) 10 x 15 x 5 = 750 cubic cm b) 750 / 100 x 0.02 = 0.15 cm
6/ 300 / 100 x 5 = 15
7/ 2.3 + (2.3 / 100 x 90 = 2.07 cm) = 4.37 cm
8/ 120 / 100 x 0.03 = 0.036 cm = 0.04 cm
