**Write a mathematical equation to show your working out to the following maths problems.**

**1. Jona was only 20% of the size of the whale. If the whale measured 200 metres high, how high was Jona ?**

**2. Jona caught only one – five hundreth of the fish caught by the whale. If the whale caught 1000 fish, what percentage did Jona catch and how many exactly was this ?**

**3. Jona swam at a speed of 2.5 km / hour – but the whale could swim eight times this fast.**

**a) How fast did the whale swim in one hour ?**

**b) How far did Jona swim in one day ?**

**c) How far did the whale swim in one week ?**

**d) How much further was the whale than Jona after five hours ?**

**4. Jona’s whale swallowed three 2 litre buckets in three hours – how much water is that in one day ?**

**5. Jona’s whale crashed into three rocks every 30 minutes, how many rocks did he crash into in one day’s swimming ?**

**6. Jona’s whale squirted water every 20 minutes. How many times did he squirt in one day ?**

**7. Jona’s whale swam 100 km in a circle. Work out the surface area covered by his swim, using the following algebraic formulae :**

**1. Distance of an arc = r degrees.**

**2. Surface area of a circle = ii r x r**

**8. Jona’s whale weighed 500 kg – but Jona only weighed one tenth of this. How much did Jona weigh ?**

**9. Jona’s whale sank one submarine, three boats and five lobster pots every day. How many of each were sunk in one 30 day month (give your answer as a ratio) ?**

**10. Jona caught three times as many fish as jellyfish. If he caught 5 jellyfish, how many jellyfish, how many fish did he catch ?**

**Answers :**

**1. 200 / 100 x 20 = 40 2. a) 0.2**

**b) 1000 / 500 = 2 3.**

**a) 2.5 km b) 2.5 x 24 = 60 km**

**c) 7(8 x 60) = 3360 km**

**d) whale – Jona = (2.5 x 5 x 8) – (2.5 x 5) = 100 – 12.5 = 87.5 km 4. 3 x 2 x (24 / 3 = 8) = 48 5. 24 x 2 x 3 = 144**

**6. 24 x 3 = 72**

**7. a) 25 = 90r, therefore, r – 25 / 90 = 0.277 r, therefore, 3.14 x 0.27 x 0.27 = 0.2422836 square cm**

**8. 500 / 100 x 10 = 50 kg**

**9. 1 : 3 : 5 (this is a trick question !)**

**10. 3 x 5 = 15**
