E Numbers

pyramids.jpg

Ian the Egyptian wanted to build a pyramid. He collected a thousand bricks and designed a house without a lid. Inside he put all his treasures, which he hid. He carried some sand and made a stand. He write a sign that no – one could understand. But Ian the Egyptian couldn’t measure, the pyramid that he built couldn’t hold all his treasure. Ian was hopeless at doing sums. He missed with the hammer and hit his thumbs ! He didn’t buy enough nails and the wood wasn’t long enough for the rails. The gate he built started to elongate, he put in ten windows where there should have been eight ! Ian the Egyptian first tried a square, but the corners weren’t straight and his pyramid wobbled everywhere. Ian the Egyptian then tried to make his pyramid round, but it rolled over and squashed a snake on the ground. Ian the Egyptian asked the Sphynx, “What do you think would be the best shape, do you think ?”. The Mummy butted in a bit. He said a rectangle might not fit, suggesting a shape with four slits. So together they decided that a pyramid would be best … with pointed handles that could hold a treasure chest. Gradually, the pyramid grew … and inside Ian hid a gold bar or two. Although Ian didn’t use cement, he liked his new pyramid (albeit a bit bent !).

Imagine the letter “E” is a missing jigsaw puzzle. Substitute the number 7 for the letter “E” and solve the algebraic equations.

1. 7e = 49

2. 7e – 5 = b

3. 9e = c

4. 10e = 700

5. 30 – e = d

6. 90 / e = 10

7. 100 / 4 = f

8. 120 / 3 = g

9. 40 + e = h

10. 55 + e = i

11. 67 + e = j

12. k – e = 4

13. l = 5e

14. m = 80 – e

15. n = 150 + e
