The Christmas When Santa Had A Powercut

carol-singing.jpg

One Christmas, Santa was sat in the dark. When he went to switch on the lights, all they did was spark. He slipped on the rug, trying to find the plug. The light bulbs on the Christmas tree suddenly had no electricity. They flashed on and off … then fizzled and went out. Santa now couldn’t see a thing – and couldn’t see where he was going about. First he lit a candle, but then one of the elves opened the door. The candle quickly blew out of course and Santa skidded on the floor. Santa checked in the garden shed – to see if the generator was working properly – and promptly bumped his head ! This Christmas really wasn’t much fun – “Let there be light !”, he cried, but soon it was gone. The beam in the headlights of his battery – powered sleigh didn’t shine at all – now how was he going to deliver Christmas presents all around the world ? He asked Mister Frosty the snowman, who was stood outside in the snow – did he have any ideas, that might make his engine go ? Mrs. Christmas was getting upset, all because her mince pies wouldn’t be cooked on time, I bet. The fairy on the Christmas tree, didnlt glisten at all – and none of the bulbs along the stairs didn’t glow in the hall. One of the reindeers had an idea – “Got and get Rudolph and give him a bottle of beer !”, he suggested (though he feared they might all get arrested). Before long, Christmas was once again full of cheer and after that, Rudolph’s nose shone brightly all Christmas every year. The next time that Santa came in from the cold, the whole grotto was shining like silver and gold. Now Santa didn’t even need a candle when he went upstairs to bed and all throughout the night, Rudolph’s nose shone brightly red.

How Many Elves Does It Take To Change A Lightbulb ?

1. If one light bulb shone for eight hours, how many light bulbs were needed to light Santa’s grotto for all 12 days of Christmas ?

2. Only 20% of the lights on Santa’s tree were working properly. How many did and didn’t flash ?

3. Santa’s grotto had 50 lights – one quarter of them were around the door – how many is that ?

4. The star at the top of Santa’s tree flashed on and off 25 times per minute. How many times is that in one hour ?

5. Santa’s Electricity Bill

Electricity used in the kitchen for cooking £80

Power for the Christmas tree lights £120

Power for the grotto £160

a) Express this as a ratio.

b) How much electricity was used in total ?

c) What proportion, as a fraction, decimal and percentage was used for each activity ?

Santa placed twenty flower bulbs in the garden. It took a whole hour. There was a shower of rain as the Winter temperature became much lower. Whilst Mrs Christmas made cakes with flour, Santa cut the grass with a lawn – mower. After they had scoured all the pots and pans, Santa poured himself and Mrs Christmas a sherry to drink, though it tasted sour. There was a powercut that lasted an hour, Santa telephoned his wife and told her on the blower.
