Winky The Dinky Minky Whale

Winky was dinky – there was no point in trying to hide it. Whenever he hid behind a rock, he was two inches less wide than it ! Winky was so small – he could hardly be seen at all. He didn’t want to spend the rest of his life as small fry – to be so tiny made him blubber and cry. Winky went looking for sea weed for his tea – actually he was the biggest weed in the sea ! The sharks and jellyfish thought this was a laugh – a minky whale who was better off swimming in a puddle or a bath ! No wonder Winky looked pale for a whale, unlike all the other powerful wails, Winky only had a third of a centimetre tail with which to set sail. He regularly was blown off course whenever there was a gale. Winky the minky whale was rather dinky, he crashed into the seashore when the lighthouse was on the blinky. Winky admired all the other whales than swam about in the ocean – so he asked the mermaid to fix him a growing – up, getting – big magic potion. The mermaid looked around for things to put in it … a starfish, a seashell, splash of seawater and some treasure as well. Whilst the mermaid swirled around the magic lotion, on the quayside, there was quite a commotion. The sailors all came to watch. One or two even gave the mermaid a fish from their catch. Just as the potion came to the boil, Winky the dinky minky whale, guzzled it all down whole. Mmmmmm. It tasted quite nice, though he did drink so much that he burped once or twice. The cockles and mussels came to see, if it improved the dinky whale’s size – so he was bigger than a pea. Gradually, Winky the dinky whale grew and grew … within an hour, he was larger than a barge, then after a day, the harbour, too ! Just when Winky thought his extension was about to stop, it started to rain … and he shrunk an inch with each PLOP ! Fearing that the mermaid’s magic enlargement potion would turn out a flop … Winky the Dinky whale swallowed another drop. Thank heavens for mermaid magic – that kept Winky growing. Soon, over the horizon, only the spurt he was blowing was showing !

Answers :1. a) 5 500 kg b) 500 / 5000 = 1 / 10 = 0.1 = 10 %2. 7500 + (750 / 3 = 250) = 1 000 m3. 2500 + (2500 / 100 x 20 = 500) = 3000 m = 3 km4. 300 – (300 / 10 x 4 = 120) = 180 m

5. 25 x 8 = 200 m

6. a) 600 x 4 = 2, 4000 kg b) 400 %

7. 500 / 100 = 5 m

8. a) 45 mins b) 1 hour and 15 mins

9. 4 (400 / 5) = 80 m
